The Music

The music of Third Orchestra has been led by key themes, eve looking to express the transcendence of boundaries, the joy of difference, the celebration that comes from spontaneous meetings.

THEMES

‘The space between’ (Barbican)

Led by the wonderful haiku of performance poet Ursula Rucker. ‘Amaze, be brave!

‘Between two waves of the sea’ (Grand Junction)

T.S. Eliot: We shall not cease from exploration. All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Coastal (Turner-Sims, Southampton) The liminal meeting of land and sea. Setting out on a journey to the New World.

Yet there is time - Club Inégales/CD recording

Inspired by Rabrindanath Tagore: ‘Yet there is time’. -to change the world.

Time -Tradition -Transfusion

With Swiss percussion Christophe Fellay.

The Healing Circle at SOAS, and Bush House, London

THE PROCESS

The work makes the best of three phases:

Preparation

Writing often happens in duos or small groups, then captured in basic notations.

Realisation

Settling parts, orchestrations and roles with the whole group

Performance

Including improvisation.

DIRECTOR SIGNALS

Peter uses improv. signals in both realisation and performances such as:

LOOP - SOLO - COPY - LIKE - HEAD - HARMONISE - BACK TO THE PREVIOUS SECTION…… DO WHAT YOU LIKE

THE SOUND

The music usually is built by establishing strong centres, around which an array of responses can play and align.

Open - to every layer of sound and vibration, every possibility.

As every new person joins a spiral something is shared - from an inflection on a Korean flute, to the precise percussive sound of an African mbira, or a pure string harmonic glowing at the top of a viola.

The alchemy is when the musics sound against one another, creating layers of magic.

The purpose is not to seek fusion.

Rather the autonomy of every artist, in every moment.

L’HISTOIRE

In this video, from the children’s concert in Southampton, you hear Peter build the sound, step- by-step leading to the exquisite singing of Emilia Mårtensson, drawn from a Swedish folk song .
